Wetlands Bird Hunt Lesson Plan

Sumi Matsumura

Title: Bird Hunt

Grades: 1-3

Objectives:

  1. Students will practice coordinates.
  2. Students will identify birds found in the wetlands.

Preparation: Draw coordinates grid on an old table cloth, shower curtain or piece of cardboard (for example). Lay it on the ground, or on a table in the classroom. Place a circular piece of construction paper on each coordinate. Put pictures of different birds found in your local wetlands on the backs of some of the pieces of construction paper (leaving some of them blank).

Procedure: Divide class up into two teams. Have a person from one team go up to the grid, name a coordinate and point to it. For example, a student may say B7. If she points to the wrong coordinate, she looses her turn. If she points to the coordinate she named, let her pick the piece of construction paper and turn it over. If there is a bird on the back, she must name/identify it. If she does so correctly, her team gets to keep that bird. If not, it is put back (turned over). If there is nothing on the back, the team still gets to keep the piece of construction paper. Teams take turns until all pieces of construction paper are gone. The team with the most birds wins.

* Optional - You may want to put pictures of predators, or things harmful to the birds of the wetlands on the back of some of the pieces of construction paper. If a team member picks that coordinate, they keep it. At the end, when the birds are counted, subtract the number of predators the team had from the number of birds. For example, a team may have 7 birds and 2 predators. Their score would be 5.
