Rules and Procedures
Jeffery Weiss Literary Award Competition
Theatre Historical Society of America
- The Competition is open to anyone, except members of the Elias Weiss family, THSA Weiss Committee, officers and directors or their immediate families.
- Entries should represent an original, comprehensive effort in research and documentation of some aspect of theatre history, detail description or architecture relevant to THSA’s interest, as defined in its by-laws:
(Article III): The Society’s interest shall include all buildings designed or primarily and regularly used for the exhibition of stage or motion picture presentations, and the equipment related to those buildings. All periods of American theatre design and construction shall be considered to have equal historic interest.
Topics related to theatre buildings, their equipment and their operation (e.g., architects, stage and equipment designers, decorators, owners, builders, managers, front-of-house and backstage staff) shall be included.
Playwrights, performers, producers, motion pictures, organs, musicians, etc. except as they relate directly to the physical object of the theatre, shall be considered peripheral to the Society’s field of interest.
- Photographs or illustrations with appropriate identification/captions are strongly encouraged, as they count in the scoring of the entry. [See #9 for submission requirements.]
- Entries may not have been previously published by THSA, nor be submitted more than once. A person may submit only one entry each year.
- Except as noted herein, copyright ownership remains with the author.
- Submissions should follow The Chicago Manual of Style.
- Entries must be printed or typed, double-spaced using a 12-point font (sans-serif preferred) and one-inch margins on white 8½ by 11 inch (or equivalent) paper and be no less than 2,500 words nor more than 5,000 words in length, exclusive of footnotes/endnotes, bibliography, and/or index. Pages must be numbered, with the title of the entry (abbreviated if necessary) on each page. DO NOT include your name anywhere in the body of the text or in footers or headers.
- A cover sheet must be attached to the entry containing your name, mailing address, e-mail address and telephone number. Also indicate how you learned of the Competition. You must include and sign the following statement:
”This entry is submitted for the Jeffrey Weiss Award Competition. I, [your full name], agree to abide by the rules and procedures of the Weiss Committee and grant THSA both initial and subsequent publication rights in any manner or form without further compensation.”
- You must submit one (1) printed copy and one (1) CD (or 3.5” diskette) containing the entry in Microsoft Word (PC format) [WordPerfect 8.0 or higher is also acceptable].
- DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OR ILLUSTRATIONS! You must submit a CD (which may also contain the entry) with high quality scans (300dpi or better, 900x1200 pixels or greater, tiff format preferred, jpg format acceptable) of all photos and illustrations. Source credits for each image must be provided. You are responsible for obtaining from the owners of all images the necessary reproduction rights and permissions (furnished to us upon request) and for payment of any applicable fees upon our notification that your submission has been accepted for publication.
- All entries must be postmarked by December 31 of the competition year and submitted to:

- Winners will be notified by May 1 of the year following the Competition year. Awards are presented at the annual summer Conclave/Theatre Tour of the Theatre Historical Society. Winners are encouraged to accept their awards personally (and may, if interested, register for and attend the entire Conclave at the THSA member rate).
- Up to three awards may be given in any year, consisting of a certificate and monetary prize as follows:
- First Place - $500
- Second Place - $300
- Third Place - $100
- The Weiss Committee, in its sole discretion, may declare a tie for any of the awards and divide the monetary amount accordingly.
- The Weiss Committee, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to not give any or all awards in a particular year.
- All decisions of the Weiss Committee regarding judging, procedures and/or interpretation of the Rules shall be final.
