American Theatres of Today, by R.W. Sexton and B.F. Betts, was originally published as two separate volumes in 1927 and 1930. It is one of the very few books on theatres produced during the era when movie palaces were being built all across the country, and contains essays on many design and operational aspects of theatres of the period, illustrated with hundreds of beautiful photographs, drawings and plans. There is also an introduction by famed showman Samuel L. “Roxy” Rothafel.
Original copies of this book are extremely rare and sell for many hundreds of dollars. Even the 1977 single-volume reprint, also out of print, is hard to find and expensive.
To do justice to this special work, it has been printed it in its original large-format size, using heavy acid-free paper. Like the original volumes it features blue cloth covers with a gilt title and border on the front, and a gilt title on the spine
In addition to the alphabetical index, we have added cross reference indexes by theatre name, location and architect, as well as a list of corrections and clarifications to the original edition, all of which make it more user-friendly, accurate and informative.
The book is 9 by 12 inches, 368 pages, and contains material on 113 theatres, with 275 photographs and 278 plans and illustrations.
