LIS 601 Introduction to Reference & Information Services
Introduces the philosophy, principles and practice of reference/information
services in libraries, information centers and online communities. Examines
the nature of reference work, human information needs and information literacy.
Studies the characteristics and application of bibliographic control, reference
effectiveness research, and electronic information retrieval systems. Provides
practical experience in evaluation and use of bibliographic and Webliographic
materials, reference interview and search technique. Includes field component.
LIS 605 Basic Cataloging & Classification
An introductory course in cataloging and classification. Covers
basic application of AACR2, Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal classification
systems, and Library of Congress subject headings, as well as use of OCLC.
Includes field component.
LIS 610 Introduction to Library & Information Studies
Introduces students to the role of libraries and their social
utility in an information society. We consider the historical context and
discuss the future of libraries and information centers in a changing technological
world. Topics include: characteristics of the information professions, information
ethics, intellectual freedom, and intellectual property, access to information,
as well as national and international library development.
LIS 619 Conservation of Library Materials
Survey of the nature of library materials and the variety of
processes which cause their deterioration and destruction, and of the procedures
useful in combatting them. The subject is approached from the point of view
of the library administrator rather than the practitioner (restorator, binder,
etc.).

LIS 650 Management of Libraries & Information Centers
Basic theories and principles of administration for effective
management of public, academic, and special libraries and information centers,
with emphasis on planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and control.
Administrative aspects of public and technical services, facilities, planning,
evaluation, public relations, interagency cooperation, and the management
of change in bureaucratic organizations.
LIS 661 Information Sources & Systems in the Humanities
Examines the information structure of humanities disciplines;
including fine arts, theater arts, applied arts, literature, music, religion,
mythology, philosophy and related fields. Focuses on the information cycle,
print and digital reference and information services, and information-seeking
in the humanities. Includes field component.
LIS 663 Basic Online/CD-ROM Database Searching
A study of the use of online and CD-ROM databases for the retrieval
of bibliographic and non-bibliographic information. Reviews the role of online/CD-ROM
database services in reference work. Provides practical experience in learning
the essential features of using the most popular online and CD-ROM services
and products (Dialog, SPIRS).
LIS 681 Books & Media for Children
History and criticism of children's literature; contemporary
books and media; trends in book publishing and media production; developmental
needs and interests of children; selection and evaluation, and research
studies.
LIS 682 Books & Media for Young Adults
History and criticism of literature for young adults. Contemporary
books and media. Trends in media for young adults. Developmental need and
interests of adolescents. Selection and evaluation. Research studies.
LIS 683 Services in Libraries
Planning and implementing services and programming in public
and school libraries. Trends, issues, concerns, networking, competencies,
developmental needs and interests, research, preparing grant proposals.
LIS 685 Traditional Literature & Oral Narration
Analysis and evaluation of traditional literature of various
countries, emphasizing the Asia-Pacific area, with attention to traditional
literature's value/use as source material for storytelling. Instruction
and practice in the selection, adaptation, and presentation of stories. Bibliographic
searching and documentation in traditional literature.
LIS 690 Library Internship Program
Field experience in a library setting with the supervision of
a professional librarian. At the Wong Audio Visual Center: Search for video
purchase information, research quality of possible video selections, prepare
lists of videos on specific subjects, identify Internet selection sources,
assist in faculty outreach.
LIS 694V Special Topics in Information Technology- Database
Evaluation
An open-ended course that provides a mechanism for allowing
special and recent topics in such areas as software content evaluation of
multimedia databases, database publishing on CD-ROM and on the Web, bibliometric
and scientrometric studies, library automation, information transfer, networks
and library information systems management
LIS 694V Special Topics in Information Technology -Introduction
to Information Technology
An open-ended course that provides a mechanism for allowing
special and recent topics in such areas as software content evaluation of
multimedia databases, database publishing on CD-ROM and on the Web, bibliometric
and scientrometric studies, library automation, information transfer, networks
and library information systems management.
