CBHSD PROGRAM
The Competency-Based High School Diploma Program (CBHSDP),
approved by the Board of Education, provides adults who are non-high school
graduates as a valid option to obtain the Hawaii high school diploma through
the community school for adults.
PURPOSE & CONTENT
The purpose of the CBHSDP is to enable adults to further
develop their communication skills-reading, writing, listening and speaking;
computational skills; problem-solving skills; and interpersonal skills.
The activities are designed to help adults become functionally competent
individuals within the following five units:
| 1. Community Resources |
2. Government & Law |
| This unit focuses on the types of services available
in the community and the means by which individuals can obtain them.
Some of the Performance Expectations require students to read bus and airline
schedules; to go on trips to designated sites; to read street maps; to
listen to speakers on various topics; to calculate airfares; to learn about
public assistance; to give oral presentations and to use the telephone
effectively. |
In this unit, students gain an understanding of their
individual rights and responsibilities through the study of governmental
agencies, functions and regulations. They must attend a public hearing;
write to a government agency for information; be able to distinguish differences
between civil and criminal laws; know the qualifications for assistance
from various agencies; give an oral presentation on a newspaper article;
know the procedures relating to a will and a divorce; and be familiar with
some functional words in government and law. |

services available in Hawaii; listening to various speakers; knowing the
effects of drugs and being aware of other health-related topics. |
Students obtain needed information and skills to secure
employment which accomodates their individual needs and interests.
In this unit, students are engaged in activities that require them to read
and use newspaper ads effectively; to fill out various application forms;
to go through the interview process; to calculate net pay, overtime, etc.;
to understand earnings statements; to discuss advantages and disadvantages
of different sources of employment; and to know the financial and legal
aspects of employment. |

money management, including the basics of consumer decision-making.
Students are expected to do basic mathematical operations, to know the
basic concepts of sales and income taxes; to be familiar with financial
services in the community; to recognize fraudulent practices; to use consumer
guides and resources to select goods and services; to begin to understand
