E Ho‘omau- Project Description
E Ho'omau (is the imperative form of the Hawaiian verb meaning to persevere, to persist. It urges us to learn from the past and to perpetuate the good).

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to develop an engaging curriculum that will employ animated versions of traditional Hawaiian legends, standards-based written materials, and teacher training to strengthen language arts and science achievement for Native Hawaiian 4th graders. The E Ho‘omau project will fuse education, technology and a visually-rich learning system based on Hawaiian legends to improve performance, elevate student motivation and enhance self-confidence.

The goal of E Ho‘omau project is to increase the literacy achievement of Native Hawaiian Children through proven pedagogy applied to a culturally rich curriculum.

ANIMATIONS
The E Ho‘omau project will produce three animated Hawaiian legends, each about 15 minutes in length. Each featurette can work as a stand-alone piece or be combined to create a larger feature. The curriculum is based on a core of some 90 vocabulary words. The animation scripts will integrate as many of the 90 target words as possible. Each featurette will have its own distinct visual style.

Each Legend will have a story featuring a storyteller who tells these tales to a group of children. The storytelling components of the featurettes will have their own subplots that complement the legends. For example, two of the children in the storytelling group might be portrayed as bickering sisters, allowing the storyteller to lead into the story of Pele and her sister Namaka. Another example might be a young boy upset because his older brother was killing birds with a sling shot. The storyteller could let this lead into the Menehune and the Birds story. At the end of each featurette, the storyteller wraps up with a "lessons learned," including some specifically for the listening group of children.

CREATIVE PRODUCER/CREATIVE DIRECTOR MICHAEL CEBALLOS
Michael has been in the animation industry for 20 years. Most recently he was Art Director on Cosmos Chaos! A Nintento DS game for struggling fourth grade readers. Before coming to Hawaii Michael was the character design supervisor for the hit Nickelodeon TV series "The Angry Beavers". While at Nickelodeon he also participated in a mentor program that worked with troubled inner city school children. The program worked with 10 children from elementary school thru junior high. As a group the kids made an animated cartoon that was shown on air. Michael also worked with the legendary producer Robert Evans on a animated series about his life for Comedy Central. Michael has also worked at various studios like Hanna-Barbera, Warner Bros., Fox Animation, Klaskey Chuspo and Wildbrain just to name a few.
