Accessibility within Maui Public SchoolsThis website aims to explore the physical accessibility of facilities for all of the people who attend and work for Maui District Schools. More specifically, two persons, a student and a staff member, have provided personal insights of what life on campus is like for them. Understanding that these individuals represent people who have all types of disabilties within Maui Public Schools and other public schools across the State of Hawaii, makes their stories all the more powerful. One would not expect their experiences to be much different from the life and work experiences of other students and staff members who frequent the schools. As persons with disabilities, however, their perspectives and their experiences as members of the community are important to share.
Hawaii Department of EducationHawaii is the tenth largest school district in the nation with 283 schools across 7 islands. During the 2002-2003 school year, there were 182,798 students enrolled in the Hawaii Department of Education schools. Approximately 29.000 of those students receive services from either Special Education or Section 504. Nearly 4000 of the students who receive special programs reside on the islands of Maui, which include Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
