Report:
Determined to promote the University Chess Club, we set up in the hustle-bustle of Campus Center. On a TV played "Searching for Bobby Fischer." An array of Dave Klan's chess books sat out on an exhibition table to be perused by any passerby. Dave hung out and played the informant and announcer.
The first five players took their seats after we had been set up for an half-an-hour or so. David Klan coerced them with his shy announcing of such things as, "Come win a gift certificate..." and, "Beau's really not that good." Funny stuff. Among the first five players was David Kuo, a regular of our club and the ICC. After awhile he managed to win the exchange in our game. After the tumult of a few more moves, I managed to escape with a draw. How, I don't know. This would be the only draw in a total of 11 games. Among the other games was this game you see me sitting down with. I concluded the game by sacrificing a bishop on h2 for forced mate in 4.
We gave away two T&C gift certificates to participants who gave me a good run for my money. A few new people have made the pilgrimage to Manoa Gardens for the club meeting as a result of the simul. The simultaneous also resulted in my being a celebrity on campus for awhile. I was walking through Campus Center the day after the picture ran in the school newspaper, when someone from above me most unabashedly yelled, "Checkmate!" I've never heard of such a thing as chess groupies, but.... And I'm kidding about the whole ego thing. Well, perhaps I'm kidding.
