As a
developmental psychologist, I am particularly interested in
developmental changes that occur during the transition to
adulthood. As a researcher working in the most diverse county in
the United States, I am fascinated with the opportunities Hawaii has to
offer in examining cross-cultural differences as well as similarities
in
developmental processes. My
major
research interests include:
Lifespan
identity
and career development

Relationships

A longitudinal study of mental
health, identity and career development in adolescence and during the
transition to adulthood (Principal Investigator). This
7-year study of adolescent and young adult development is currently in
its sixth year. The
goal of this project is to
explore complex, multivariate relationships among mental health,
identity, and career development during the transition to
adulthood. The focus of this study is on examining potentially
protective effects of developing a sense of identity
and engaging in career decision making, preparation, and implementation
of career choices on adjustment and mental health. I am also
interested in identifying longitudinal trajectories in different
domains of
development, examining long-term effects of adolescent
development, and exploring changes in the structure and direction of
inter-domain effects, particularly during the transition from school to
work. This study, funded
by
two consecutive grants
from the National Institutes
of Health, began in 2001. During the
first phase, 2001-2004, a large, diverse sample of high school students
had been recruited and surveyed four times (3 times while in high
school and once after graduation). Additionally, a
smaller sample of college students had been also studied longitudinally
in order to explore cohort and age-related differences in developmental
changes in
various domains. Thanks to the
generous support from the NIH, the study continued in
2004-2008. During the second phase of the project, the former
participants in our adolescent development
study have been studied annually since they graduated from high
school. The
8th wave of data collection has been recently completed, and we are
currently finishing the project's database, which will be used for a
variety of analyses on longitudinal data. This
study would not be possible without a truly invaluable help from my
long time research
associates, Reece Uratni and Tamia McKeague.
Enhancement of the
research infrastructure
at the University of Hawaii-Hilo (Co-investigator). This project, funded by a RIMI
grant from the
National Institutes of Health, is led by Dr. Rose Tseng, UHH
Chancellor, Dr. Dan Brown,
UHH Coordinator of Research and Graduate Studies, and Dr. Dyanne
Affonso,
Program Director. The major goal of this institutional grant is
to increase the number and quality of research initiatives
at UHH, particularly in the area of health studies. My current
role on
the project involves developing tools for facilitating and enhancing
research activities of the UHH faculty and providing faculty, staff,
and students with methodological consulting on the issues of
research design, sampling, data collection, statistical analysis,
etc.
