Login to Cataloging:

Voyager folder on Desktop
Cataloging icon
Operator ID = cat [tab]; Password = read [rtn]
maximize screen (optional)

Settings:

timeout value (C:\Voyager\voyager.ini) timeout = 300 (seconds)
options, preferences (cataloging module)
general = holdings/item default location: Z Hamilton Main
colors and fonts = white plus 4 other colors; font size 12, not bold

Types of records and record hierarchy:

authority
bib
holdings (mfhd = MARC format for holdings data)
item

Searching:

STAFF searches retrieve all records, including suppressed ones
OPAC searches do not retrieve suppressed records
original system no. (CARL bid no. will be in 035 subfield 9)
bib, authority, holdings, item record no.
WebVoyage (OPAC view, does not retrieve suppressed records)
selecting a record will bring up the MARC editing screen

Display:
banner (record type, ID no. and title)
option bar (keyboard equivalent with alt-key is underlined)
icons (search, headings, titles, holdings, items, associated records, help)

MARC expanded view buttons
leader
005 = date and time of latest transaction
006 = additional material characteristics
007 = physical description fixed field
008 = fixed length data elements

system tab (suppress from OPAC)
history tab (date, operator, location of record creation and last update)

Printing:
full record (file, print record)
Note: check if characters are lost at right margin
screens of retrieved titles or headings
(alt-Print Scrn; paste into word document)
Note: if there is more text below the first screen, scroll down and print another screen)

Navigating:
scroll bar, page up/down keys
selection column (grey column to left of tag number column)
row marker symbol (arrow or bullet)
cursor arrow keys (left-right within a line in the subfield area)
cursor (mouse or alt-up/down to point to a new position in the subfield area)
tab (forward to next cell within a line; will continue to next line)

Context-sensitive help:
point cursor to desired cell
press F2
click ‘cancel’ to exi

Help icon (question mark at the end of the toolbar):
type the first few letters of the desired help topic, click ‘disply

Closing the record:
click file, close
or the lower of the two 'X' buttons in the upper right corner (do not save changes)

Closing the module:
click file, exit
or the upper 'X' button in the upper right corner

NOTE: The ‘cat read’ read-only password for the Cataloging module will not allow the user to take any final actions that affect the database (save, copy, delete, etc.), but it is possible to edit the active record. Please be careful not to change anything. If by accident something is changed, just close the record without saving changes.

What cannot be done in the Cataloging module that we know of so far: (use WebVoyage instead)

print a record in public bibliographic display format
save or copy record as a text file
send record via email
