About the Veterinary Occupation

Job Outlook and Employment

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it's a good time to become a veterinarian. Employment is expected to increase by 33 percent from 2008-2018, much faster even than the average for all occupations.

Recent trends show an increase in the number of cats as pets and a more modest pace for dogs. Employment opportunities are very good for companion vets in cities and suburbs but even better in rural areas where there are a limited number of vets.

The number of jobs for farm animal vets is thought to increase more slowly than the number of jobs for companion-animal vets. Nevertheless, job opportunities should be excellent because of their lower earnings and because many veterianrains do not want live in rural or isolated areas.

Veterinarians with training in food safety and security, animal health and welfare, and public health and epidemiology should have the best opportunities for a career in the Federal Government.

Summary

Significant points from the article include:

  • Veterinarians should love animals and be able to get along with their owners.

  • Graduation from an accredited college of veterinary medicine and a State license are required; admission to veterinary school is competitive.

  • Job opportunities should be excellent.

  • About 80 percent of veterinarians work in private practice.
