i
try hard not to categorize school as different from the real world,
though my brain is sometimes hard to control. someday i'll find
some cognitive pill to fix that i'm sure.
in
this page i have links to the research that i'm actively pursuing at
present. please feel free to offer advice.
i'm currently a second year ph.d student at the university of hawai'i at manoa's department of linguistics. before that, i got my ma at taiwan national chung cheng university's institute of linguistics. and even before that, i got my ba at dartmouth college, also in linguistics.
here are some of the projects i've been working on.
| Language Documentation | University
of Hawai'i at Manoa Language Documentation Project
Reduplication as Affixation in Paiwan - MA thesis, National Chung Cheng University, Institute of Ling. Iconicity in Paiwan Reduplication - In progress (needs revision as recommended by the editor of Oceanic Linguistics) |
| Cognitive Linguistics | CLRG (Cognitive Linguistics Research Group) The Action Compatibility Effect in American Sign Language - Presentation at the 2004 Conceptual Structure, Discourse Language (CSDL) |
i have been learning chinese kungfu for six years now. if you are in taiwan and a student under thirty years old in national chung kung university in tainan, national chung cheng university in chia-yi or national sun yat sen university in kaosiung, you should join our kungfu club! kungfu has made me healthier and has taught me tons of stuff about life in general.
right now one of my homework assignments is studying Confucius' Analects. i have organized a reading group of about ten people or so. we meet every two weeks, drink tea and discuss maybe four or five verses at a time. it's a nice pace, and you don't have to speak or read chinese to attend. if you are interested please contact me. some essays i've written on confucius' sayings are given here.
i try my best to remind myself of the help i've received from my parents, teachers, classmates, neighbors and friends by volunteering my time in activities that might help others.
i've included a list of some of the projects that i've helped organize and positions that i've held/hold.

if
you are interested in community service, i suggest you think about who
or what in your community needs help or could be improved. then
try to
help out. some ideas are community sports programs, literacy
programs,
tree planting, garbage clean-up and recycling, labor rights, creating
part time work for starving graduate students...(my advisor is actually
working on this now, please feel free to give
him
your support)
available upon request
