During the 2004-2005 school year, the HIEP convened a number of groups to discuss education in a democracy:

  1. September 9 & 10, 2004: IEI group Education for Everyone: Agenda for Education in a Democracy by Goodlad. Mantle-Bromley, & Goodlad.
  2. Fall and Spring (ongoing) led by Aiko Oda, Gail Awakuni, & Stephen Marble -Campbell Complex Developing Networks of Responsibility
  3. October National Network for Educational Renewal in St. Louis, MO .
  4. January 27 & 28, 2005:
                 Deaufer Lecture Dr. David Berliner:
      1. Faculty Study Group
      2. Public Lecture
      3. Invited Breakfast for Community Leaders hosted by the College of Education Dean
      4. Lecture for COE Student Teachers
  5. April - August 2005 Strengthening and Sustaining Teachers Contract from UW
      1. Partners are HSTA, DOE, COE & C A&S

HIEP held meetings to facilitate communication between the COE and K-12 schools:

1. October 10, 2004:

  • Principals Feedback Meeting

2. April 9, 2005:

  • Mentor Teacher Appreciation Conference

College of Arts and Sciences, COE, and K-12 collaborated to address content area needs in the following ways:

  1. Development of new courses for elementary education students:
    -mathematics course
    -science course
  2. Development of integrated Social Studies course for secondary education
  3. Development of Art Minor for elementary education students

    -approved by Arts and Humanities
    -currently pending approval by Arts and Sciences and Vice-Chancellor

  4. Collaboration to offer HAWST 107 through Outreach College in fall 2005 for in-service teachers at Kamehameha Elementary School.
  5. Collaboration with Outreach College to provide 37 (500 level) courses

The HIEP initiated tasks to identify mentor teachers and schools which host COE ITE students for observation/participation and student teaching on Oahu.  Information will be used to develop a system for planning future communication systems and events. 

On May 6, 2005, we received notification from Ann Foster of NNER that UHM and HIEP have been selected at the recipient of the Nicholas Michelli Award for Promoting Social Justice.  The award was presented at the 2005 NNER Annual Conference in October.
