UH
MANOA GEAR UP
The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UHM) GEAR UP
Program works with the Class of 2006 at Farrington High School.
UH Manoa GEAR UP is designed to support early college awareness
and preparation, by providing students with access to rigorous academic
courses, financial aid information, and individual scholarship accounts.
GOALS
1. Prepare students to access opportunities for post-secondary education.
2. Ensure that parents value higher education, access resources,
and support their children in pursuit of post-secondary education.
3. Assure that teachers and staff are prepared and committed to
mitigate the negative effects of poverty on students and their access
to higher education.
4. Establish a system to acknowledge academic achievement and to
award financial assistance to GEAR UP students.

(Studies of Heritage and Academic Languages and
Literacies)
The SHALL project offers
courses in heritage languages, English literacy and computer technology.
Ilokano and Samoan language courses offer students the opportunity to
develop complex and high-level language skills in their heritage languages.
English and study skills courses allow for life long learning of English
speaking, reading, writing, and computer technology skills through training
students in analyzing the purposes and uses of language. These courses
aim to enhance students’ self-esteem by changing the common view
that heritage languages and cultures are problems to an orientation in
which home languages and cultures are valued as resources of great academic
and social value.
> COLLEGE OUTREACH
UH Manoa GEAR UP students and parents are informed of college
admission requirements and college costs. Outreach is implemented through
in-school assemblies, classroom visits, parent and student information
meetings and a newsletter.

> TUTORING
After school tutoring
classes are provided to keep students involved and engaged in school and
in the learning process.
> UH MANOA GEAR UP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Individual Scholarship Accounts have been established for GEAR
UP participants. Deposits to the students’ accounts are made with
varying amounts for achieving project outcomes (e.g. participation in
programs, increase in grade point average). At the time the student enrolls
in a post-secondary institution, a check is cut directly to the college/university.
> UH MANOA GEAR UP INDIVIDUAL
DEVELOPMENT ACCOUNTS (IDAs) PROGRAM
Savings IDAs are matched savings accounts that help students from
low-income families to accumulate funds to be used for educational purposes.
Savings IDAs promote economic self-sufficiency, build financial skills
and knowledge, and provide early financial planning and preparation for
higher education.
