NOTE: The original incentive for preparing this list of Web sites was provided by my work on the future of social science in a global context. However, subsequently, work with an interdisciplinary group of social scientists at the University of Hawaii led me to think that a more ambitious list would serve a useful purpose. Our group started with some analysis of the basic critique of the established disciplines offered by the Gulbenkian Commission, chaired by Emanuel Wallerstein. The results are organized schematically on the basis of the outline posted above, and the Site Map -- just click on any item.

My starting point involved writing links for the home pages of international professional associations in the social sciences, followed by other institutions, international and domestic. As the list grew, I saw the need for better bibliographic information and statistical data available through the INTERNET and in libraries. Then I took up substantive themes related to my own research: globalization and glocalization, ethnicity and nationalism, constitutionalism and democracy, political science and public administration. Finally, I thought we needed information about some fundamental matters: the segment on terminology reflects my belief that we need to improve our ability to identify new concepts and find unambiguous ways to represent them. Moreover, to pay for research we need money, leading to a segment on foundations and other sources of support for research. For more detail, view the SITE MAP. If you want to search my home page, please check out FreeFind or go to the Atomz search engine for more detailed answers.

This site is subdivided into four major sub-sites for people || information || themes || fundamentals. These sub-sites are partitioned into segments each of which is subdivided by topics -- they are listed in the Map , which also includes an alphabetical index. AtomZ will help one find answers to specific questions about this Site. TOP returns one to the top of this page,

For external connections, segments of this list are linked to related segments of my Home Page by an asterisked HOME*. Without a star, HOME returns one to the top of my Home Page. To search the INTERNET, click on SEARCH which opens an extended list of engines and also offers information and help for creating and using Web Sites.

ORGANIZATIONS

Click on a group's acronym to open its Home Page where one can find information about its goals, organization, activities, and publications. Some sites have useful lists of related sites -- they are linked in a sub-line.

ETHNIC-L: Some of these sites belong to members of ETHNIC_L. They are identified by stars (*) that support a jump to their entries in the ETHNIIC-L ORGANIZATIONS list. These entries provide a short statement about the group's activities, mailto links for its contact persons, and supplementary links for resources, bibliography, syllabi, terminology, etc. This list also facilitates comparisons between groups. HOME PAGE DOCUMENTS takes one to links for some activities and texts relating to ethnicity, nationalism, and migration.

CONTACT PERSONS persons identified in the ETHNIC-L entries belong to a listserv that supports the sharing of information among members about their research, conferences, publications, etc. A planned Terminology Page will facilitate improved communication among specialists on ethnicity. Members are entitled to re-distribute data to their own members, thereby facilitating cooperation and coordination of effort between scholars working in different organizational contexts. The listserv does not duplicate information found on each group's Home Page -- rather, it enables members to inform each other about new information posted on these pages.

NOTE: Further information and analysis of the untoward consequences of large-scale immigration, efforts to restrict it, and public policy dilemmas that reflect the powerlessness of migrant minorities can be found in World on the Move, the newsletter of the Section on International Migration of the American Sociological Association. See also the extended bibliography sponsored by this section plus their extended set of Links . These works focus on the problems and role of ethnic minorities while largely ignoring their political status and lack of institutionalized representation as an explanatory factor.

A comparable service for foundations in Canada exists. Links to groups supporting social science research are listed below -- readers are invited to suggest additions and to report errors. Funds emphasizing natural science are included when they support cross-disciplinary research in the social sciences. Many thanks for all help in developing this list. FWR
