ETHNIC-L
ETHNIC-L is an interactive list of organized groups, associations and
centers interested in promoting research on ethnicity, nationalism,
migration and related problems. Each record on this list will
contain the following elements:
- An acronym that also serves as a link to the group's Home Page.
- The group's full name
- A statement about the group's identity and activities, as paraphrased
from its Home Page
- Supplementary links of general interest
- One or more contact persons for each group, usually with a
mailto link
As a Listserv, ETHNIC-L enables members to share information so as to
facilitate cooperative activities. It is not a substantive discussion
list, but it can support discourse on organizational problems faced by
members. Membership is restricted to liaison officers of each group --
they agree to inform members of newly posted information on their Web
Pages, and to distribute relevant information to their own members, with
credit to ETHNIC-L. Several discussion lists are included -- they are
identified by an asterisk (*) and anyone interested in joining them should
contact the list's manager.

Committee on Politics and Ethnicity
Research and activities reflect a broad variety of approaches:
modernisation, dependency, Marxist and non-Marxist, pluralist, public
policy, public choice, and so forth. The committee is primarily concerned
with the problem of how ethnically defined communities can co-exist in a
mutually beneficial manner. Theory is developed through deductive means as
well as through a case-study approach or comparative analysis. In
addition, other members examine the subject of intergroup relations by
using such approaches as segmented pluralism; majoritarian, pacted, and
consociational democracy; and intergroup negotiation, mediation, and
conflict management.
The Committee sponsors: NATIONALISM AND ETHNIC POLITICS. a

UNESCO/MOST:
highlights the management of ethnic conflict
MOST is a research programme, designed by UNESCO, to promote international
comparative social science research. Its primary emphasis is to support
large-scale, long-term autonomous research and to transfer the relevant
findings and data to decision-makers. MOST also publishes state of the art
reports that assess existing information on specific topics. The overall
long-term objective of MOST is to establish sustainable links between the
scientific and policy communities and to emphasize the relevance of social
science research for policy-formulation.
Ethnic and cultural diversity is a fact which can and should enrich
social life in all parts of the world. One focus of research under MOST is
on the nature of change in multi-cultural and multi-ethnic societies in
which issues of education, culture and religion, identity and human needs,
democratic governance, conflict and cohesion interact in complex patterns.
These issues require interdisciplinary, comparative, and culturally
sensitive research which may furnish information useful for the peaceful
and democratic management of multi-cultural and multi-ethnic societies.
This research should help design policies that contribute to the goals of
achieving equality of citizenship rights between ethnic groups and the
avoidance and solution of ethnic conflict.
