Dear fellow sojourners,
As part of an ongoing research project my
colleagues and I are eliciting travelers' descriptions of their experiences of
a "sense of presence."
Perhaps you could help us.
Do you recall experiences abroad in which
you were totally aware of what was
happening around you at that time? That is, your thoughts weren't
wandering into the past or future or to people or events elsewhere. That
experience is called a "sense
of presence." If you recall such experiences, please describe
one or two in terms of:
Where were you (nation, city, etc.) and what were you doing?
What was the experience like (your sensations, feelings or
thoughts)?
How long did the experience last (seconds, minutes, hours, days)?
Did you like the experience? Do you tend to seek such experiences?
Please send your description to me by email
or mail to me at:
Gary Fontaine, Ph.D.,
I thank you in advance. All your responses
will be treated anonymously.
Please check out my new ebook
entitled Presence in
Strange Lands. It deals with the experience of global travel--how it impacts our state of
mind, our feelings and our immediate experience of the world around us. If you would like to see some sample
descriptions of presence go to A Collage of Sense of
Presence Descriptions. If you
wish more information about the topic please refer to my articles "The Experience of a Sense of Presence in Intercultural and
International Encounters" and "The Role of a Sense of Presence in the Satisfaction and
Motivation of International Assignees Before, During, and After Their
Assignments" or other links through my Home Page.
