Project reports which include the correct population estimates can be

This
study is from the Schistosomiasis Research Project; Ministry of Health and
Population, Egypt and USAID, Cairo.
The
project was the vision of Dr. F. DeWolfe Miller. The design of the project was
by Dr. Miller, Dr. Medhat El Sayed, and Dr. Maha Talaat.
Other
participating American and Egyptian investigators are included in the
individual documents.
The EPI
123 Schistosomiasis Study was the largest epidemiological investigation on
schistosomiasis under taken in Egypt or elsewhere ever. The
objectives and methods of the study are given in the Introduction and Methods
documents below which can be downloaded.
Although
this study was the largest epidemiologic study of schistosomiasis ever carried
out in Egypt,
the study was implemented in different regions of Egypt by different teams headed by
local investigators. There were eight local PIs in all. As pointed out in the Methods,
the local PIs were given a plan for sampling and standardized methods
developed by the Core Team leaders Drs. Miller, El Sayed, and Talaat. These
methods were to be implemented in a described uniform manner throughout the
study. This did not happen in all cases. For example, the data from Ismailia and Minofiya were not collected
according to the sample drawn specifically for each of these two governments.
The documents for Ismailia and Minofiya are linked below and indicate how the
data from these studies can be interpreted.
The rationale for creating this
site was that the publication of the study in the American Journal of
Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in
2000 was badly flawed. The analysis of the data in the supplement to the publications
- do not reflect the sample design
and the correct weighted estimates. Accordingly, the results
and estimates published in the 2000 Supplement have flawed estimates. Prior to publication, the
Egyptian project director handed over
the raw data to GT Strickland at the University of Maryland who did not
have the training and resources to
conduct the analysis the study that it was intended. Strickland had no
hand in the creation, design, or implementation of this large and
historic project. It was unethical for the Egyptian director to give
and for Strickland to receive these data and subsequently move the data
out of Egypt to the USA.
The two
lead articles cited below show and document how these flaws occurred. If the peer
reviewers for the American Journal of
Tropical Medicine and Hygiene had read these two leading articles before reading the following
reports in the supplement they would have seen this flaw. Although this was pointed out to the editor
James Kazura in a letter to him regarding this issue, my request not to publish
flawed data was dismissed.
