The Counseling and Student Development Center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa offers practicum training to graduate students in psychology or related fields. The  practicum is a half-time (20 hours / week) placement that emphasizes two major concentrations:

  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Career counseling

Practicum counselors will also select one area of minor concentration each semester:

  • Workshop design & facilitation
  • Group psychotherapy

The CSDC Practicum follows a practitioner-scholar model of training that emphasizes practical experience, clinical supervision, and training seminars. As a result of completing this practicum, trainees will display knowledge, awareness, and skills related to individual psychotherapy and career counseling and one or more areas of minor concentration. An emphasis on ethical and professional conduct will be infused throughout the year.

The CSDC practicum is a nine-month placement that corresponds to the UHM academic year. Trainees will be expected to provide 200 hours of direct service to students and log a total of 600 hours on site. Twenty hours each week need to be scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Two weeks of orientation will occur in August and the practicum will end in May or when the 600 / 200 hour commitment has been completed. Applications are coordinated through students' graduate school programs.
