MCC CHANCELLOR’S ADVISORY COUNCIL HORIZONS COMMITTEE MEETING

November 29, 2004

Attendance:  Scott Broadbent, David Cole, Dorvin Leis, Clyde Sakamoto, Steve Williams, Bill Wong.

Meeting called to order by Dorvin Leis.

Resource Development: 

• Income/Expenditures – Scott gave a presentation to the committee showing income and expenditures during the past year.  Unit summary reports were presented showing this year’s activity.
• Income Goals – A goal of $580,000 has been set for this fiscal year.  Scott explained the UH Centennial campaign which is currently in the “Quiet Phase” and will become public this summer.  Dorvin has made a generous pledge to lead this initiative.

Institutional Advancement Goals: 

• Instruction and Operational Program Support – Proposals were submitted to the UH Foundation by campus units to support academic programs.  Approval was sought by Horizons Committee members and Bill Wong moved to support the programs.  The motion was seconded by David Cole.

• Sustainable Technology –
• The EPSCOR grant was written to support sustainable technology. 
• In 2006, MCC will host the 9^th annual Islands of the World conference where the theme will be sustainable development.
• Brian Nattrass and Mary Altomare are presenting a “sustainable development” lecture.  Windpower is one step MCC is actively pursuing.  Bill Wong mentioned that we need to get the information about the Nattrass presentation out to the community.   Clyde indicated that his presentation will be aired on MCC’s Channel 55   KeAo newsletters were distributed and the recommendation was made to use recycled paper with soil based ink on the next newsletter.

• Capital/Infrastructure:  Maui Oral Care Center – There is a need in the community for a new facility to serve the poor of Maui County.  Over $160,000 has come in to the existing center through Medicaid since March and the program is becoming self-sustaining.  Currently there is a Dental Assistant program but MCC hopes to also offer a Dental Hygienists program in the future.  The Weinberg Foundation will be approached to gift the land and facilities construction for the new Oral Health Center; $100,000 has been received from the Strong Foundation for design work.

• Scholarships – New scholarships are being sought as we examine new means of helping Maui residents fund a college education.   The Culinary Department has been quite successful in getting community support.  A suggestion was made to contact the MLP fleet manager to brainstorm about the local automobile dealers working on a focus group to find resources for auto scholarships.  Maui has a problem with low wages and high home prices; student housing needs to be affordable for students to attend college.

• Fundraising Strategies –
• Leadership receptions
• A suggestion was made by the committee to tie into the county fair parade
• CAC members would like a formal calendar of fundraising events so they can plan their year.
• More of a college town feel needs to be developed
• The Mayor is in support of MCC but support is needed from the county council backing up our four-year degree offerings.
• Horizons committee members were encouraged to bring guests to the Class Act to share MMC with the community.  
• Conversation should begin with Mary Ann Fitch and Rob Merriman to work with the realtors on getting MCC information to new home buyers.
