This is the Makapuu, Oahu, Hawaiian launch site from which
I set the cross-country distance record of 28 miles in 1975 (see
magazine article #29 in my publications). In 30 mph trade wind
ridge lift, I flew to the left of the Olomana peaks (center of photo) and
followed the Koolau ridge to well beyond farthest edge visible in this
shot. I landed in treetops above a stream in a deep lava ravine 28
miles down-range behind the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie. My
record lasted six months. Now the world cross country distance record
for hang gliders is more than ten times as great.
Yes, that is my launch man ducking below the platform as I catch the elevator. The boom on my helmet holds a mini-variometer (see: Inventions) and wind speed meter of my design and manufacture. |
