This is an annotated listing of selected books and videos on historic theatres, gathered from a variety of sources. It is not a comprehensive
bibliography on the subject, but rather a starting point for further reading and research;some of the works listed also cite additional references. Many of these titles are "classics" in the field and "musts" for those interested in historic theatres. Unfortunately,
some of them are also difficult to obtain; while many are readily available, others must be "special ordered" or found through other means.
Those with the notation "[to order this title]" may be directly ordered on-line --usually at discounted prices-- from Amazon.com. If the book is out of print, they will search for it at no charge. (To do either, simply click on the phrase and follow the instructions.) Those seeking a hard-to-find title might also consider searching online or placing a classified ad in our membership Newsletter.
Contact our Executive Director for details.
Not included in this list are publications by the Theatre Historical Society of America (which are listed in the Back-issues section of this website), periodicals, books on theatre architecture, restoration, or management, per se, pipe organs, historic theatres in other countries (with a few exceptions), those works with only passing references to
theatres, or works published before about 1970 (unless subsequently reprinted).
Lastly, this listing is strictly subjective and is intended to serve as a reference aid. The description, inclusion or exclusion of an individual work does not reflect the official views of the Theatre Historical Society of America.
Suggestions, additions or corrections to this section are welcomed by the Webmaster.
